CRO Communities

To date, the Connecting Rural Ohio project has provided technical consultation, hardware, software and additional services to four Appalachian Ohio communities:

With additional support from the Governor’s Office of Appalachia, several additional sites will be chosen for deployment in the coming months.

Approximately 1.4 million Ohio citizens reside in the state’s 29-county Appalachian region, which occupies 14,299 square miles of southeastern Ohio. Nearly one-fifth of the population in Appalachian Ohio lives below the poverty level, and one-third of Ohio’s 100 lowest performing school districts are in that region. The college attending rate for Appalachian Ohio is 30 percent, compared to 41 percent for the rest of Ohio and 62 percent nationally.

Chesterhill produce auction
The Chesterhill Produce Auction provides local and regional growers with informative workshops on growing tips, marketing, product presentations and other assistance. As the produce auction grows, there is a great need to bring the buyers on-line. With the broadband initiative and Wireless Neighborhood, the Produce Auction has a communications venue that allows prospective buyers to communicate with their markets. Instant electronic communications helps to spur further economic development and ensure a constant flow of prospective buyers to match the proposed seller's growth.
